Laser & Electrolysis Studio, Inc - The Haute Sponsor that Removed our Beards!

While I was in Austin over the Holidays, we met with Cheryl Piquard, owner of the Laser & Electrolysis Studio, Inc, who is one of our newest Haute Sponsors! Cheryl was so warm and inviting when we arrived and I felt extremely relaxed in her studio.

"Back in the Day", Anne Marie and I were "bearded ladies"... and I came across Cheryl and the Laser & Electrolysis Studio, Inc by searching for "bearded ladies" info on the web - you know how you always want to "Google" yourself, right? (Admit it, you do it, too!). Well, every time, I would come across this article, and other articles that Cheryl has written. She started one of the first electrolysis centers in Austin, and I found that interesting! Not only does she do the more popular and recent laser treatments, but she still uses electrolysis as well. We asked her "why" at our meeting and she explained that laser works great for people with darker hair and fair skin where the contrast is great, but that lasers have a harder time picking up lighter hair or gray hair, or where the contrast is not so great, so many women need both to get an effective treatment for permanent hair removal. Fascinating - never knew that - Anne Marie and I both love learning new information, and as I said, Cheryl was wonderful to meet with and very informative.

Cheryl, Anne Marie and I decided that our two companies would be a "perfect fit"! After all, we needed to have our beards removed so we could reveal our new name, "The Lone Star Ladies" to get ready for our upcoming shopping event, The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin.

The Laser & Electrolysis Studio, Inc. is located at 1513 W. Koenig Lane, Austin, TX 78756. Check'em out!

At Home with Melissa Madison of Crab Apple Designs

Melissa Madison has lived in Austin for over 20 years, and being inspired by her experiences here, she started Crab Apple Designs in 2008. After looking over her beautiful paper and fabric art, we suspect she has been designing and crafting for much longer than 1-2 years! Her attention to detail and eye for the irresistible "adorable factor" were two of the many reasons we chose her to be a 2009 vendor at our upcoming show, The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin.

Her 3-D stickers are handcrafted using different patterned paper, and layered to pop right off the page, or wherever you might use them! If you need a cute pouch, you can purchase one that is handcrafted and appliqued with a cake on top - with a slice missing of course because her designs are so cute they make you want to eat them right up!

Click to play Crab Apple Designs

Aside from nature in and around the Austin area, she is also inspired by Scandinavian designers. After selling at our show, you might find her relaxing at the East Side Cafe, Mr. Natural or Magnolia Cafe. Although you can buy her products in person at our show, if you are traveling you can pick up her designs at Cupcakes a Go-Go in Sarasota, Florida or online at her Etsy shop, www.CrabAppleDesign.Etsy.com or www.BlueCakeAndButterCup.Etsy.com. Keep up with Melissa through her Blog.

Dancing Dingo - Sophistication Unleashed

Maybe it's their catchy name, their "naturally-good-for-you" body products, or their Dog De-Funkifier line of grooming products - or maybe we chose Dancing Dingo as a vendor for our upcoming show, The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin due to all of the above! Kathy Goodwin started Dancing Dingo in 2003 and since then has been offering natural, earth & animal friendly, and eco-friendly body products for the whole family. There is even a Dingo Baby line for gentle and skin-friendly essentials.

Click to play Dancing Dingo

"We are proud of our products as well as the care and ingredients we put into each of them...once you try our shea butter soaps and aromatic bath essentials Dancing Dingo will become your skin's best friend." Conceived, designed and produced in Austin, with a fun and funky persona, makes Dancing Dingo a perfect fit for the capital city. Kathy also enjoys eating at Eddie V's on 5th and listening to their amazing jazz - a love of live music, another reason to love Austin.

After you discover Dancing Dingo, or rediscover them at our show on April 18th, you can find their products around town at Wheatsville Co-Op, Massage Envy or Salon Uffizi.

Ornamental Things - Jewelry for Ladies with Style

Natalie Tischler is the creative genius behind Austin's own Ornamental Things. She crafts one-of-a-kind and limited production jewelry from recycled vintage findings.

In 2004, Natalie started her business after years of creating unique items for herself and friends. Her line took off almost immediately - and thanks to a great website and wonderful marketing, Ornamental Things can now be found in stores across the USA.

My personal jewelry collection from her includes several pieces - many of which I wear ALL THE TIME. I am a total jewelry hound, and love to support local artists. If you enjoy wearing a unique and "ornamental" piece of jewelry - you will definitely want to come see Natalie and her amazing creations at The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin!

On Saturday April 18th, 2009, the finest crafters, designers, artisans and indie biz owners will gather together at Saengerrunde Hall to showcase their wares. Come one, come all to the finest shopping event in town - and give Natalie Tischler a warm shout out!

Mrs. Beasley - Accessories for a Sassy Lady

Tina Forever, owner and creator of the accessories line, Mrs. Beasley, is a professional tattoo artist and ultra crafter.

She takes vintage handbags and paints them with tattoo inspired artwork - featuring sassy dames from a bygone era. Her bags are very eye-catching, and will certainly get you noticed.

Last fall at The DIY Factory in San Antonio, I got a chance to meet Tina Forever. I had long admired her bags, which are for sale at Austin's Parts & Labour. She recently added hip hair accessories to her line.

Adorable miniature hats, feathers and birds' nests perch atop her head in her "Stuff on My Head" album on MySpace. The headpieces are sooo cute, and will be sure to delight the diva in your life as a one-of-a-kind gift. Look for Mrs. Beasley to be one of our 2009 Vendors at The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin, taking place on Saturday, April 18th in downtown Austin.

One Creative Girl - The Perfect Business Name

Have you ever seen a business name that is just PERFECT? I think Melissa Gable of One Creative Girl really got it right. You just can't describe her or her work any better.

Melissa is a professional graphic designer, mixed media artist, crafter and great gal. She is probably best known for her adorable note cards that feature vintage fabric prints in the shapes of purses, shoes and poodles.

Like many artists, Melissa can't be satisfied with just one medium. She makes art dolls, photo collages, hip vintage jewelry brooches and tons more. Her booth at our 2009 Shop Austin event will be a hot spot for those looking for gift items for the artists at heart in their lives. My mom has been sending out her note cards for years, and continues to draw new fans to Melissa - as many of my moms friends are quilters and fabric lovers!

Keep up with what is inspiring Melissa on her blog, and shop her items online at her etsy shop, and the ArtShop at Moore. As the weather warms up, you may spot Melissa hanging out on Lake Austin at the famous Hula Hut - I may have to join her! We can't wait for you to meet Melissa at The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin!

Ballistic Sweater Girl - Hip Handbags to Rock Your World

Last year during SXSW - the week in March where all the hippest hipsters convene on downtown Austin - I spotted at least 5 girls carrying a Ballistic Sweater Girl handbag. In just 4 years, Austinite Wendy Irwin has taken a part time passion into a full time purse empire. Her bags are immediately recognizable, long lasting and totally hip.

Wendy started Ballistic Sweater Girl Designs - or as I call it, BSG, in 2005. She uses vintage and new vinyls and automotive textiles to create "all original designs with a rock-n-roll flair." The daughter of a custom vintage car upholsterer - she has an enviable background in exceptional technique. Pick up one her bags, and you will notice great stitching and compelling design. I have to give a personal shout out to Wendy for sharing her industrial machine with me!!!

My favorite BSG bags are those that feature vintage car decals. In October of 2008, The Austin Chronicle named her the "Best Handbag Designer in Austin" - how cool is that?!? She has also been featured in many other publications.

You can find Ballistic Sweater Girl Handbags at this year's highly anticipated shopping event - The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin. She is one of our vendors - and we're honored and excited to have her amazing work presented for your pleasure! Wendy's bags can be found locally at Parts & Labour, or on her website or etsy shop. Keep an eye out for her snacking on sushi at Mushashino Sushi, her favorite Austin restaurant.

Coral Reef Dreams by Pauline Walsh Jacobson

Imagine relaxing at the beach, the sun going down, the water lapping at the shore in the distance...this is what comes to mind when you see the beautiful jewelry designed by Pauline Walsh Jacobson, owner of Coral Reef Dreams (Jacobson Associates, Inc.). "Sterling silver, gold filled and niobium wirework are all combined with art glass, gemstones, freshwater pearls, beach glass and seashells to create one-of-a-kind designs." Her one-of-a-kind pieces combining stones, glass, pearls and artisan wire design proved to us she needed to be a 2009 vendor at our upcoming show, The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin.

Click to play Coral Reef Dreams

Pauline started her business in 2002 and is committed to coral reef conservation by donating a percentage of her annual sales to its cause. Her sea glass is genuine and unaltered and all her ocean resources are collected by herself in unprotected areas. Pendants with netted bezels and advanced wire wrapping techniques give her jewelry a colorful, distinctive and eclectic look - and the beauty is, it is all handmade! She is inspired by the wonderful artist of the Wire Artisan Guild and enjoys dining at Z-Tejas.

Her jewelry is also sold in the US Virgin Islands at Pink Papaya Gallery, Syzygy Gallery, Colorful Corner Gifts and Decor, or you can find her online at www.CoralReefDreams.com or www.CoralReefDreams.Etsy.com.

Second Party - Same Party, New Design by Megan and Katie

Megan and Katie think Austinites are looking for more handmade goods - we think they're right! Their company, Second Party, produces clean, crisp handmade cards, stationery, custom invitations and gift items like calling cards, calendars and notepads and they will be a 2009 vendor at our upcoming show, The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin!

Having a background in architecture provides an eye for "clean, classically simple designs." Drawing inspiration from architects Herzog and de Meuron, fashion designers Betsey Johnson and Anna Sui, Marimekko textiles, Kate Spade stationery and Neiman Marcus window displays, Second Party provides Austin Shoppers a nice variety to fit all their different tastes! Second Party started in 2005 and has been featured in such blogs as Paper Shop Ink and participated in a giveaway/feature for Oh How Lovely. We love their stationery and are excited to have them in our show!

They also have our heart when it comes to Mexican Food - Anne Marie and I, as well as our family, have been long time favorites of El Patio and it was on Katie and Megan's list, too, as well as Starlite. adaptive reUse - Reckless Recycling

Austin artist Christine Terrell - a self-coined "Reckless Recycler", has been crafting innovative accessories out of upcycled and recycled materials since 2004. I first saw her work in Parts & Labour - when she was making wallets out of woven paint chips. I purchased one for a friend - and he and I were both surprised at how long it lasted.

Christine's company, adaptive reUse, has been a strong presence in the Austin "green scene" - since long before the current "green" label was so popular. She was interviewed as a featured artist on the East Austin Studio Tour by the Austinist in 2008. It was important to us to pick a wide variety of artists for The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin 2009 - and Christine's work really encompasses the Austin Spirit.

As a fellow artisan, it's wonderful to watch someone's body of work progress and grow. Christine's work continues to strengthen in composition and across many techniques. Her jewelry is bold in it's statement - that recycling can be devastatingly fashionable - and "colorful and whimsical" in style.

Click to play Adaptive ReUse

Christine's work is sourced from Austin-based resources, and can be found at Moxie and the Compound, Women and Their Work, Greater Austin Garage Arts and WinkSF in California. You can find her work online at her Etsy Shop, and may spot her eating at Titaya's Thai Cuisine - her favorite Austin Restaurant!

We can't wait to see all of her new creations on April 18th!

Mighty Michele - Monopoly in a Whole New Light

When Michele Keith's application and pictures arrived, Anne Marie and I were both fascinated. We had never seen a handbag made out of a Monopoly game - have you? She uses the traditional game for purses like "Luxury Tax" and "Go to Jail", but the spin-off versions of different Monopoly games such as Texasopoly shine with her purses "Sorority Row" and "Spring Break". Michele's creative handbag design company, Mighty Michele was started in 2008 and she will be featured as an Up-and-Coming Handbag Designer at our show, The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin for 2009. She uses the entire game to construct her one-of-a-kind handbags. Her craftmanship is amazing - the handles are hand folded, woven, sewn and sealed Monopoly money, accented with game pieces and lined with fabric. The inside of each purse is lined with fabric and hand-stitched at the top for a cute finish! She conceived the idea with the thought of reusing board games purchased at thrift shops. "My handbags are weird in a cool way, just like Austin."

Click to play Mighty Michele

Her biggest inspiration - her mom - and you might find the two of them having dinner one evening at Michele's favorite restaurant, Z Tejas. Not only will you be able to purchase one of her bags at our event, but you can shop online through her Etsy Shop at www.MightyMichele.Etsy.com.

BabyBolt - Designs by Becka Spellman

Becka Spellman's biggest inspiration is her little "baby bolt", so in 2008 she started BabyBolt - handmade clothing and accessories for babies and kids. Her variety of products caught our attention and we are proud to announce she will be a 2009 vendor at our upcoming show, The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin.

Becka uses a unique combination of new, vintage, repurposed, and imported fabrics to create items such as aprons, crayon pouches, new baby gift sets, bibs, appliqued shirts and library totes - all while her little one sleeps or goes to preschool. "I shy away from trends and embrace individuality...you won't see another kid at a playdate in the same shirt!" Her "Ready-to-Wear" items are all pre-washed in eco friendly detergent that is dye and fragrance free.

Recently, her aprons were featured in the Austin American Statesman and she was at Maker Faire - Bazaar Bizarre 2008. BabyBolt items can also be bought online at www.BabyBolt.Etsy.com, or at Austin Baby if you are shopping around town. You might see her at her favorite restaurant, Mr. Natural! Our Newest Haute Sponsor - The River 102.3

We are excited to announce The River 102.3 as a Haute Sponsor for The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin! Anne Marie and I were so excited the day we walked out of our meeting with Angie Ray back in July of 2008 - they were the first company we approached for sponsorship and she said "yes, I am sure we can work something out!" We had spent time into the "wee hours" of the night before preparing for our meeting and it was such a positive reinforcement to know that someone else believed in what we were doing! So although we are just now announcing them, they have been involved and on our side since the very beginning. Another reason we are excited to have The River as sponsors is because our event is family-friendly and our partnership with The River will only help to promote that even more, and they are a GREAT radio station to listen to!

Reaching out to a much broader customer base will set The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin apart from other events - it is our goal to connect the fabulous vendors we have with ALL of Austin and broaden not only the exposure of our vendors, but the horizons of our shoppers, and we say "thank you " to The River 102.3 for helping us to make that happen! Listen for our radio ads beginning in March of 2009!

Earth Art Austin - Pottery that Feeds the Soul

Jaime "Jim" Fernandez of Earth Art Austin is one of only two potters in this year's shopping event - The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin. He handcrafts beautiful pottery with intricate glazes, often using "'veined' patterns allowing two or more glazes to interact in interesting ways."

When you see his work in person, you will be thinking of all the people who would love a platter or bowl as a gift. I participated in the 2007 Thornton Road Studio Sale with Jim, and people where "oohing" and "aaahing" over his work all weekend! There is something amazing about using dishes made by hand - you feed your soul as well as your body!

TLSLP: Shop Austin
was put together to showcase the finest artisans that Austin has to offer - Jim's work certainly falls into that category. He is also a photographer, and will be selling matted prints of his work. The male members of our artist selection jury particularly liked his work - so we hope you come ready to shop for Father's Day as well! Our Dad loves to collect pottery - and we bet yours will like the work of Earth Art Austin.

Click to play Earth Art Austin

Jim says he is inspired by the work of early Native Americans who made such intricate pottery by hand, and with more limited tools than what artists have available today. He started Earth Art Austin in 2003, and has shown his work in many local arts events. You can find his work for sale at Architects and Heroes, and might see him enjoying dinner at one of Austin's finest restaurants - Fonda San Miguel.

Meet Austin Yarn Company - Handcrafted Organic Felt Handbags

Austin Yarn Company is owned by Cathie Hutchins - a self-taught knitter and designer with some kick-butt industrial sewing machines! Last Fall I answered an ad that someone was selling an industrial machine.

I have been wanting an industrial machine for a long time, and Cathie was offering a great deal. When I met her, I hadn't heard of her amazing Handbag and Accessories Line, and I was impressed! Being a handbag designer myself, I love to meet other designers and appreciate the work that goes into making bags.

Austin Yarn Company's bags are unlike anything I have ever seen! They are made with thick, luxurious wool felt, are sturdy and durable, and accented with gorgeous large stitch silk threads. For the fiber arts lovers out there - you have to see her bags in person to really appreciate them - and you will love them!

Cathie uses all organic and fair trade materials - and works out of her studio in the heart of Austin. She believes in supporting and building the grassroots economy in Austin, and is a fine example of a woman-owned business. Her participation in The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin is a perfect fit - we're all about promoting local businesses & artists. Cathie takes much of her inspiration from Sculpture - which is apparent by her elegant design aesthetic, and you might spot her (or one of her hip bags) eating at her favorite restaurant - Vespaio.

Austin Yarn Company products are currently sold at Moxie and the Compound and on her website, www.AustinYarnCompany.com. Cathie's bags and accessories have been featured in the StyleShaker, the Austin American Statesman, and the GoodLife Magazine. We are thrilled to have her as a vendor at our first event. Tisa's Creations - Stylish Accents for Fabulous Gift Giving

I first met Tisa Jackson, owner of Tisa's Creations, at the Grand Opening Party for The Stitching Studio. It was a great little shindig hosted by Ann Randall at her beautiful sewing and crafting studio in North Austin.

Tisa had an adorable display of her handmade cards and gifts set up, and I was immediately drawn to check them out. She had sassy ladies, mod dots and stripes and these soooo cute packets of decorated chocolate.

Tisa's Creations was started in 2007 when Tisa decided that her card stamping hobby could become a business. She counts her daughter as her biggest inspiration, saying "I want her to know she can do anything she puts her mind to." I would have to agree with that!

You might see her out and about with her iPhone, iBook (she let me borrow it at a boring event!) or taking in the scene at Chuy's, her favorite restaurant. Tisa also writes a fun blog and has been interviewed by Black Purl Magazine. We are so excited to have her as an Up-and-Coming Vendor at The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin - and know you will love her work!
