Talmadge Art Show - A Look Back...

I first wrote about the Talmadge Art Show on 11/21.   It turned out to be a wonderful afternoon with my husband and I am so glad I found it last minute.

Some of the artists I spoke with that day were Barry Pechersky and Richard Sted, both pottery artists.  Their work was wonderful, but they were just as wonderful to talk with, too. Richard had one piece left of his "naked pottery", seen below, and it was really amazing to hold - rough on the outside, but smooth on the inside.  He said the raw clay looked like lava!

Barry's pottery was beautiful as well!  His explained some of the process of glazing the plates - I just remember that he uses wax to keep the colors from mixing!

From You've Been Happpened - The Talmadge Art Show, 2009

Marion Renee creates "wearable art" by painting on blue jean material and then handcrafting a purse. The purse below is one of her newer log-style purses and the wood is hand pieced by her husband.

From You've Been Happpened - The Talmadge Art Show, 2009

Nancy Lawson has exquisite and intricate bead embroidered jewelry!  The beads were so tightly embroidered together I could not see one speck of the felt she used as a base.

From You've Been Happpened - The Talmadge Art Show, 2009

Jill Mollenhaur's work was just as great in person, and even better!  I discovered she also does the welding of her base pieces.  I really love these because they are different, fun and whimsical.  I think having these in any garden would bring a smile to someone's face!

From You've Been Happpened - The Talmadge Art Show, 2009

Lisa Meeham of Mama Gourds has a unique art - one I have never seen before.  Her gourd pieces are fascinating and full of detail.  I also loved that her daughter's drawings were the inspiration for some of her pieces.

Lek Namnath's purses and totes reminded me of AYC.  This is the first time I have seen felt purses by another artist.  She explained that using a bucket helps to shape some of her purses or totes.

From You've Been Happpened - The Talmadge Art Show, 2009

My last vendor to visit with for the day was Lisa Confetti.  I stopped because my sister and I both love art, and we also love history.  Lisa uses art images long out of copyright date to create reversible necklaces.  The images are captured between pieces of resin.

A video of more WONDERFUL art I saw that day...

You can view all the pics in "You've Been Happened - Talmadge Art Show"

Contact and web information for the artists spotlighted in the video and on Picasa:

I will be sure to put the Talmade Spring Art Show on my calendar - all you San Diegans need to as well - it is definitely a Haute San Diego Event!

Talmadge Art Show in San Diego, 11/22/09

The Talmadge Art Show looks like a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon in San Diego!   "It is a homegrown, quality handmade craft show produced and showcased in San Diego."  Some of the art I will be interested in seeing tomorrow is that of  Garden Angels Sculptures, who has one of a kind garden sculptures, and Urban Organic Designs, who works with gemstones, silver, fossil ivory and precious stones for beautiful nature inspired jewelry!

The show began in 1992 as a way for artists to have a positive environment for showcasing and selling their art. The first show had 5 artists and was in Sharon Gorevitz's home in Talmadge Park.  It has since out grown her home with more than 25 artists and is now at the San Diego Women's Club.

They will also feature guest clay artists of San Diego and Elly Dotseth is one of them.  She recently opened her own community clay studio in La Mesa called Get Centered Clay Studio. I plan on visiting this studio, too, so look for more info in coming weeks.

This show is a new find for me, and one I am sure to enjoy tomorrow!  Join me at 2557 Third Ave, San Diego, 92103, from 10am - 4pm.  Admission and parking is free!

*annemarie* & Sweettooth Bags at E.A.S.T. this weekend!

Did you miss out on the first weekend of E.A.S.T.? It is a seriously Haute Event, with over 150 stops on this year's tour.

*annemarie* (yours truly) is being hosted by the lovely and talented Amy Barber of Sweettooth Bags in her home studio. I've pulled together some choice shots of Amy's home/studio/gallery - and as one shopper noted last weekend, "it's the best stop on the tour!"

I'm also showing a small collection of Art Bags at Space 12 - keep scrolling for delicious eye candy!

You can find all of this amazing work, and much much more this weekend! If you're in the mood to start of Sunday with some local, organic food - stop by Rain Lily Farm. Former Austin Fashion Designer and Stitch Founder Jesse Kelly-Landes has returned from San Francisco, where she was studying the fine art of pastries....

She tells me they will be serving freshly grilled meats, apple rosemary handpies with local organic apples and rosemary, and more. Jesse is also taking orders for holiday catering and gifts, including items like salted chocolate caramel tart, pumpkin spice pie and assorted cookie boxes. Here is a complete menu for download!

See you this weekend!

The Artists of E.A.S.T.

 The East Austin Studio Tour, or E.A.S.T. is an annual event that invites the public into the homes, studios, and galleries of Artists working in East Austin.

The semi-industrial but steadily gentrifying portion of town called "East Austin" has long been a haven for artists, as rents tend to be lower, and the community more accepting of people "as you are."

For this year's E.A.S.T. the planners extended the show across two weekends, giving the public more time to come out and visit the 150+ stops on the tour! They also added happenings throughout the week, one of which I will be attending tonight! (Look for a blog post about the Mixx and Make by The Wondercraft next week!)

I am also showcasing my work in two spots on E.A.S.T., and will post a guide through *annemarie*'s eyes on Friday, Nov. 20th.

Today's post focuses on a few of the talented artists I had a chance to meet this past weekend. Allison and I were blessed to have parents and grandparents who raised us with an appreciation of art through many trips to museums, galleries and hours of time in Mom's sewing room and Pop's (Grandfather) study - full of art books and art!

My eyes literally teared up upon encountering some of the work I saw. You can see the passion in an artist's face when she/he talks about their work. I caught some lovely pictures of artists on this year's tour. Enjoy!

Paper Mache like you've never seen it before...

Artist Dan Kaplan took the time to share with me his process for painting paper, cutting it into strips, and mixing his special, all natural, blend of flour and water for paper mache. I walked into his studio and felt this immense sense of joy at his work - my pictures just don't do it justice!

Luxurious Encaustics

Artist Daphne Holland is a beauty, and a light shone from within her as she spoke about her work to me. Encaustic is an ancient wax painting technique that has been enjoying immense popularity in the art and craft worlds of late. I was amazed at the variety of Encaustic art work I saw on the tour, and even got to watch a demo of it!

Daphne mixes her own Encaustic Medium, and sells it to other artists here in Austin. I captured her in front of three luminous butterfly pieces. The depth of color and texture in them is offset by the delicate three-dimensional butterflies springing off the canvas.

Powerful Imagery

One of the coolest things about Austin is the chance you will find an amazing artist humbly tucked away amongst a group of tents. I walked by Linda Wandt's booth and this beautiful painting jumped off the table and into my hands!

She explained it to me as a search for meaning and consideration into the expectations on women as reproductive entities - and what that means to us. I had to purchase the print - and I think you'll agree she is a very talented painter. Linda is also a talented photographer. I will definitely be attending her upcoming shows!

Glass Sculpture - A new life form!

When I walked into the east by southeast studios, Glenda Kronke's Glass Sculptures literally jumped off the wall at me. I thought of them as living beings - glass coral drawn up from the depths of the artist's soul.

Her work is just so striking - and it shows how fine art/ craft can be appealing to many kinds of people. Just walk into your big chain decor store - and see a mass produced sculpture similar to her aesthetic. The difference here is that Glenda hand makes and fires each piece, and puts a part of herself into each one. They breathe life! You can't get that at Pottery Barn!

Nice is Different

So is the title of artist Adrienne Butler's blog. She was another treasure set up in a tent during E.A.S.T. Adrienne had an innocence and crisp freshness about her and her work that was so appealing - she just beamed like a lovely young woman who was thrilled to be showcasing her art.

I only got one picture of her, but her blog has a nice display of her work - including an AMAZING large scale installation she did as her Thesis Project for her MFA. She is a recent graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, and is sure to make a splash on the Austin Arts Scene!

Ancient. Analog. Digital. Now.

Bam. You walk in the door of Bay 6 Gallery and Studios and these three huge Encaustic paintings explode off the wall and into your mind. The work of Sharon Kyle Kuhn is engaging, thought provoking, beautiful, and slightly creepy. I am not a "real" art critic or writer - I just speak from how art makes me feel. And I felt engaged and intruigued!

Sharon is a Nationally recognized artist with a large body of work to her name. The pieces I was in love with were Encaustic Paintings/Sculptures incorporating cast off pieces of electrical tape, media wires, paper, cassette film, screws, paper and more! Making my way through the gallery I stopped again and again at her work, and felt moved and amazed!

Sharon was a pleasure to meet, and I think I captured a delightful smile! You can see professional pictures of her work on her website!

Yes - that is electrical tape embedded by wax in a technique known as Encaustic Painting. My Dad would be amazed to see one of his standard tool box items put to such use!

~~~~~
Art is for everyone. Grab your honey, your kids, or your parents, and head out to the East Austin Studio Tour this weekend. The tour is free - the surprises and delights limitless!
Edible Handmade - Coronado Cupcakery!
My friend, Rhonda, is visiting from Georgia with her son, Joseph and on Friday we went to the San Diego Harbor and took the ferry across to Coronado Island. It was a beautiful ride, as usual in San Diego! After we landed, I was so surprised to stumble upon the Coronado Cupcakery!
Delightful goodies with names like "Lemony Lorena and Mocha Monica" (Rhonda's purchases), "Velvet Valerie" (my purchase for Kevin as a "muffin top pie" and Joseph's, too), and "Chocolate PB Jess" (my purchase to EAT!). Their baker was there with the hat and all - a great day at the Coronado Ferry Landing, and a nice surprise to find something handmade....to eat! If you are in San Diego, or Coronado, be sure to stop by!
