Haute Event: The Austin Quilt Show! Sept. 17th - 19th 2010

As I have been telling people about the Austin Area Quilt Guild's upcoming show and sale, I have been getting a lot of surprised looks. It's easy to take things for granted when you have been around them all your life - like the amazing quilts made by my Mom, Grandmother and Great-Grandmothers.

For as long as I can remember - my Mom has been Quilting - and helping put on the AAQG show every other year. As you you know - Austin is full of talented artists and artisans - those involved in fine art, fashion and film probably get the most attention. What you may not know is that Austin is also full of talented Quilters!

Last week Allison wrote a great blog about the purpose and joy Quilts have brought into her life. Today I want to tell you all about the Quilt Show this weekend - I think there will be a lot to surprise you!
Quilt by Sookie Knapp, 2008 Show
For starters there will be Quilts!  Antique Quilts, Miniature and Doll Quilts, Art Quilts, Contemporary Quilts - just about every kind of quilt you can imagine - and many more that you probably can't.  And then there are the activities - all day each day in the Demonstration Booth (scroll down on the linked page for a schedule) - coordinated by yours truly and my talented mom, Mary Beard.  Free Kid's activities, demos of the latest and greatest sewing and long-arm quilting machines, and more!

Then there are the Vendors - oh my - Fabric of all kinds, Beads, Embroidery Patterns, Handmade Clothes and Jewelry, Quilting Tools, Quilt Frames, Sewing Machines, and much more!  As you can see, you don't have to be a quilter to appreciate the variety of vendor booths.

And what about gifts?  Members of the Guild have donated beautiful items for sale in the boutique and silent auction.  You'll find napkins and placemats, purses and bags, handcrafted gifts, and quilts of all shapes and sizes. All of the proceeds from the boutique, silent auction and door fees go to support this amazing organization for two years.

The Austin Area Quilt Guild donates Quilts and Blankets to Wounded Soldiers, Baby Quilts to Mothers in need,  educates the community about quilts, the preservation of quilts, and keeps this centuries old tradition alive and relevant!

Join in the fun this weekend!
When: Friday and Saturday 9/17 & 9/18, 10am to 6pm
Sunday 9/19 12pm to 5pm
Where: Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd
Cost: $8.00, kids 12 and under FREE

xo, Anne Marie Beard - ps... I will be in the Demo Booth on Saturday at 3pm talking about using crazy and recycled materials to make purses!
