Sponsor Spotlight - Sewing Fun All Over Austin!
We at The Lone Star Ladies are all about shopping local - and many of our fabulous local artisans get their inspiration, lessons, and supplies from local specialty boutiques. This weekend's Sponsor Spotlight features three amazing specialty boutiques from around Austin. As 2010 Sponsors for The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin, local businesses help us to fund the production of the show, reach their customers, and involve an ever growing section of the Austin Community in our cool event!
Northwest Austin - The Honey Bee Quilt Store
Sisters can make great business partners - as Allison and Anne Marie of The Lone Star Ladies know! The three sisters who opened The Honey Bee in 2001, Dianne Ferguson, Maryann Westerberg and Carolyn Thompson, did so to accomplish a dream of owning a Quilt Shop together. Their original vision of the business included them opening as "Little Old Ladies" - but when another shop closed - they saw the opportunity to start young - and grow with the shop into "Little Old Lady-hood!"
Now located in North West Austin near 183 and Anderson Mill Road, they offer a unique slice of Austin's tradition of family owned arts and crafts businesses to this ever-growing part of town. Nearby handmade businesses include Marmalade Skies, The Stitching Studio, and Helios Glass Studio, - talk about a day full of fun shopping!
Quilt Shops are the treasure trove of good fabric - the kind you can't get in big box craft stores. They also feature independently published patterns, nifty and hard to notions, classes, quilt kits and more! With 2010 set as the "Changing Gears" Quilt Show for the Austin Area Quilt Guild - if you haven't checked out Honey Bee or other local Quilt Shops - it's time to "Change Gears" and pay them a visit! You won't regret it :-) Keep up with the gals at The Honey Bee on their Blog - they always have fun things going on.
Just a few months ago, Stitch Lab Owner Leslie Bonnell celebrated the Grand Opening of her new location on South First. Tucked amongst a row of restored 1940s Bungalows on South First Street (just south of the River) - The bright Blue House with Orange trim is like a crafter's dream home. Wooden floors, custom fabric and notions cabinetry, and a comfy, "mi casa es tu casa" vibe make the home come to life. (You can take a virtual tour of The Stitch Lab over at the Apartment Therapy Blog.)
Since opening The Stitch Lab in a tiny building behind her home in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood of Austin, Leslie has encouraged and embraced thousands of crafters in Austin - to a point where the demand for her classes had to be met with a bigger location.
You can take classes on embroidery, fashion illustration, handbags and totes, fabric surface design, quilting and much more! Leslie employs a revolving group of local talent as guest instructors - including notable Austinites Jen Perkins of The Naughty Secretary Club, Rachel Hobson of CraftZine, and your own Lone Star Lady Anne Marie Beard.
Leslie also carries a beautiful selection of cotton fabrics, in great prints, pretty solids, and felt, imported linen and cool notions. Stop in The Stitch Lab today for a class or just to be inspired! Make a day of South First and stop in Lovely Boutique, then get a snack over at The South Austin Trailer Park & Eatery.
Jeanie Brown, owner of The Common Thread - saw a hole in the Austin Market for eco-friendly, natural fiber, and recycled fabric for sewing and crafting projects. She spent some time researching the business and meeting area crafters, stitchers, designers and business owners before launching The Common Thread in the summer of 2009.
Since then, she has gotten great reviews in the press and from local shoppers. Her space is beautifully appointed with calming grey walls and perfect lighting - making the fabric the real show stopper. Jeanie carries patterns from independent designers, exquisite trims and notions, and an ever-evolving line of re-purposed materials sourced from local thrift stores and garage sales.
The Common Thread fabric shop truly is Austin's source for designer fashion fabrics and trims for apparel and craft sewing! Nearby places to chill on South Lamar include The Highball, Big Bertha's Bargain Basement, and the ever popular Austin favorite - Thundercloud Subs!

Austin & San Diego - Hip Events This Weekend!
Austin - The Wondercraft's Tri-Crafting: Valentine's & Anti-Valentine's class will be this Saturday, 2/6/10, 1:00m - 4:00pm. Wouldn't it be fun to "try out" three different craft techniques all centralized around Valentine's Day, plus you get to spend the afternoon in Stella, their airstream trailer that's a craft room and boutique on wheels! More Info.
San Diego - The Handmade Nation is having their Valentine's Trunk Show this Saturday, 11:00am - 5:00pm. Back in December I went to their Holiday Trunk Show and it was a delight! I became obsessed with a particular button necklace that is on my "wish list" of items to adorn my neck! More Info for Show. Check out more photos of their work, including the vintage album cover redos:
| From The Handmade Revolution, San Diego |
So, don't stay inside or at home this weekend - get out and get handmade!
