Vendor View with Wings of Addiction & Ornamental Things

Accessories and jewelry are two categories full of money-spending potential at Shop Austin 2010!  Two returning vendors, Wings of Addiction and Ornamental Things, will have their booths ready and waiting just for you!

Belt buckles and purses - what do they have in common - Wings of Addiction! Let's find out what we can expect at their booth and from owner, Megan De Luna...

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
I have a line of buckles and card cases that showcase local Austin icon photography, and purses adorned with vintage and recycled jewelry.  My business began in 2008 out of a deep passion for art, design and fashion, and to test creative wings.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Lisa Monteleon

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
Hula Hut, and anywhere on SoCo where you can find me for First Thursdays!

**********

I first met Natalie Tischler at the first Stitch Austin, but I had heard about her from Anne Marie for a while before then.  That night I bought my first "Ornamental Things" and still wear that bracelet today!

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
I recycle things that I find around Austin at estate sales, junk stores and flea markets.  I make a Texas necklace which is one of my most popular designs.  I tag everything with "Made with love in Austin, Texas".

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Currently my biggest inspiration comes from old things.  I enjoy the worn quality of the old buildings I see in my travels and the old things I see in my sourcing trips to flea markets.

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
I love to go to Magnolia Cafe late at night when I get finished with my jewelry work and my husband gets finished with band practice.  That feels very "Austin" to me. :)

We are thrilled these two vendors feel "Shop Austin-ish" to us, and will for you, too, so SAVE the DATE - 4/17/2010 is right around the corner!

Vendor View with Kandle Kidswear and designs by lanese

Babies and kids everywhere and all the accouterments to go with... onesies, T-shirts, puppets, blocks and more!  I must be speaking of the Kandle Kidswear and designs by lanese table at Shop Austin!

Kandle Kidswear was started in 207 by two great friends and busy mamas.  Laura Dooley and Kim Rodriguez have been sewing strong ever since with original felt designs on 100% organic cotton onesies and T-shirts.  Their felt is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles and is solution dyed, which means it is safe for our water system.

We have several Austin-centric designs, including our Little Longhorn, our Austin Bat, and our Guitartown, Texas design. We've gotten so much support from local retailers and feel fortunate to be living and working in such a creative community.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Our children are our biggest inspiration! Max, Kim's son, is 4; Laura's son William is 7 and daughter Kathryn is 5.

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
We love to play with our kids at Zilker Park, enjoy burgers at Billy's on Burnet, and hear live music at the Continental Club.

**********

Lanese Bush started designs by lanese in 2004, and she creates adorable fleece hand puppets, primarily featuring baby wild animals, and soft fleece alphabet blocks with appliques featuring words that start with the letter pictured on the front face of each block.

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
Puppets! Ever since I started making and selling my puppets, I have found that they are the greatest way to overcome language, culture, and age barriers! Puppets make people smile!

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is my little niece, Dailyn.

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
Kerby Lane!

Both designs by lanese and Kandle Kidswear are returning vendors to Shop Austin this year and we can't wait to see them again!

Sponsor Spotlight - The River

From the beginning Anne Marie and I wanted to promote Shop Austin as a family-friendly shopping event showcasing handmade vendors, and what better radio station to be an "extra!extra!" Sponsor than The River 102.3?  They even have family-friendly mornings, which is ever important for that drive to school or daycare with the kids in the car!

Last year they surprised us with a live promote outside of our event for a couple of hours in the afternoon and this year, we have an even bigger surprise, but you will have to be at Shop Austin to get the full scoop, and listen to The River 102.3 that day, too.  I will give you a hint...the surprise will include "Roxanne on the Road"!

The River has a special place in our Shop Austin Hearts, especially Angie Ray our account manager.   Back in 2008 Anne Marie and I stayed up really late the night before our meeting with her getting our first sponsor packet all in order.  With great excitement, we met with Angie at The River, got a tour of the Clear Channel Studios and sat down to basically sell our show idea to her.  Her positive response and support was overwhelming and it was at that moment Shop Austin became a reality for us because we had someone outside of the handmade community that was in full support of the event and in bridging the handmade vendors with the DIY crowd and mainstream shopper alike!  Shop Austin 2009 was a great success and 2010 will be even better, and our Sponsors make it all possible!  If you get a chance, be sure to listen in to The River 102.3, and you might just hear our radio ads there, or on KASE!

Vendor View with Debbie Carrol Designs and Jessica Pierre'auguste

Debbie Carroll Designs and Jessica Pierre'auguste, two Shop Austin Vendors,  will give you something to wear and something for your home this year at Shop Austin 2010!

Debbie Carroll Designs is a returning vendor to Shop Austin, and for good reason!  Her jewelry is one-of-a-kind, limited edition.  She uses vintage beads and findings, combining them with semi-precious stones, metals, pearls and contemporary finds.  Jewelry is one the of HARDEST categories to get into for Shop Austin, and we think Debbie Carroll is very deserving!

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
Vintage is very Austin and I like to reuse & repurpose when I can!

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Georgia O'Keefe - groundbreaking artist AND woman for her time! (Debbie, she is my favorite artist, too!).

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
Love to go stroll all the shops on South Congress and hit the vintage and thrift stores on Burnet Road. Some favorites - Uncommon Objects & Amelia's Retro Vogue.

**********

Jessica Pierre ' auguste is a new vendor to Shop Austin and her bio reads, "I am a graphic designer,  painter, serigrapher, and photographer."  Jessica creates canvas paintings and paintings on reclaimed wood, using acrylics, beads, thread, found objects and more on her pieces.  She also screen prints on paper and creates fabric wall hangings.   You can always find her at First Thursdays on SoCo!

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
Many of my pieces are inspired by the nature in and around the Austin area.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Other Austin artists that I see having success in the art culture here.

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
I really enjoy going to the Zilker Hillside Theatre each August with my family.

Their table is one you don't want to miss on 4/17/2010 - stop by and get something for your home and something to wear!

Frontier Sponsor Spotlight: Country and Art

Frontier, The Lone Star Ladies' Scholarship, is in full swing with applications and they are coming in - yeah!  Anne Marie and I are so happy to be able to expand our support of the handmade arts with this scholarship for graduating seniors from an AISD school, and we are happy to spotlight two of our sponsors specifically supporting Frontier:

Country Lifestyle is the Heart of Texas’ only subscriber based premier, bi-monthly, lifestyle magazine serving a growing audience of affluent and active consumers. Kelley Jo Glick, editor & publisher of CL, has been a great supporter of Shop Austin and Frontier.  We have a featured event on their website, and they chose to showcase the work of Shop Austin Vendor,  Lucy Blue Studio

I found out about Country Lifestyle through one of our vendors, Mystic Angel Creations, because they have done features on her work before.  CL's print version has regular features such as "Panache" for that just right choice in gifts or shopping, "The Texas Artist", which spotlights artists from all over Texas and their "Datebook", proving there's never a dull moment in the Hill Country.

CL will be at Shop Austin 2010, and provide magazines for each of our goodie bags!  Right now you can subscribe to CL and support Frontier.  The yearly subscription is only $14.95 and they are donating $5.00 of each subscription to Frontier.  It's a great way to find out what's going on in the Hill Country and to support our scholarship at the same time - Subscribe TODAY!  If you are a handmade vendor in the Hill Country, be sure to submit your work to CL and maybe you will get featured, to!

**********

There are many ways to support Frontier, and Catherine Hart, manager of Jerry's Artarama in Austin is giving a nice surprise - they are donating two gift certificates - one to be raffled off to support Frontier, and one will be given to the scholarship recipient for supplies of their choice!

Jerry's Artarama is the largest art supply store in Central Texas.  With 16,000 sq. feet of shopping space, quality supplies, affordable materials, and knowledgeable and friendly staff, Catherine knows Jerry's Artarama has something for everyone.  She is also a fellow artist and understands the importance of creating and making magic through art.  We are very thankful for her support!

Jerry's Artarama is located at 6010 North IH35, Austin, TX 78752, 512-420-9508 (Map It) www.austin.jerrysartaramastore.com

You don't want to miss out on seeing the Frontier Scholarship winner announced or taking a chance on the great raffle prizes we have to support Frontier - save the date - April 17th and you can Shop Austin!

Vendor View with Adaptive Reuse and Fleegal Farms

Christine Terrell of adaptive reuse and Elly Fleegal of Fleegal Farms are two shining examples of using environmentally sustainable and eco-conscious materials for their finely crafted products, and both give back to the Austin Art Community.  Christine and Elly were both participants in the Little Artist - Big Artist program with the Cherrywood Art Fair in 2009.  We've paired them together in what is sure to be an eye-catching and great smelling booth!

Jewelry is one of those categories that make it practically impossible to select unique artists for a show like Shop Austin.  We get many more applicants than we have spaces, and only the best and most creative are chosen.  adaptive reuse is one of the most unique jewelry lines we have seen; Christine continues to update her look and style, while creating innovative designs that keep the pulse of the fine craft and fashion scene in mind.  We're honored to have her as a returning vendor for Shop Austin 2010!

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?  I create modern designs using old, non-traditional materials.

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?  I LOVE thrift stores!

What boutiques or stores carry your products? Austin Museum of Art Gift Shop, Women and their Work Gallery, Creatures Boutique.

**************

Fleegal Farms is a family owned business, and a very successful one I might add!  Allison and I grew up in "old Austin" - and our parents made it a priority for us to eat at only family-owned restaurants, shop at the small hardware stores, attend craft shows, and buy fruit and vegetables from farmers in a truck on a country road (long before all the Farmer's Markets were around Austin).  It's important to us at The Lone Star Ladies that we continue this tradition of Shopping Local.  When you support your local artists - you're supporting their family, their dreams, and your community!

Tell us about your Products: We make100% natural Soap and skin care made from raw natural and organic ingredients. Our line includes a range of products from face and body soaps to creams and sugar scrubs to suit any skin type.
What boutiques or stores carry your products?  The Herb Bar, Crystal Works, Not Just Mail, The Oasis Gift Shop, The Pure Water Stop, and
People's Pharmacy.

Impressed yet?  We sure are!  Be sure to get in line for one of our amazing Goodie Bags - Elly Fleegal is donating a bar of soap to each one!

Vendor View with Lucy Blue Studio & Pommes Frites

Lucy Blue Studio by Jenifer Bryan and Pommes Frites by Kristen Pumphrey are both great examples of resourceful, original and varied craft lines.  They're sharing a booth together at Shop Austin on April 17th 2010, and we think you'll find their work inspiring and gift-worthy!

Jenifer Bryan started Lucy Blue Studio in 2006, and has quickly made a name for herself in the Austin Craft Community.  She takes her original illustrations and photographs, and makes them into a wide variety of accessories - including pendants, rings, business card cases, belt buckles and cuff links.  Jenifer is also one of the founders of The WonderCraft, and teaches classes on some of her amazing techniques - like resin coating and casting!

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My grandmother. She eats, breathes, lives crafty. She grew up during the depression so if she didn't reuse or make it herself she didn't have it. It is amazing what she can do with limited resources.

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
Sounds cliche, but hanging out at the Alamo Drafthouse. It was one of the first things I was taken to when I moved to Austin and it has always been the first the thing I recommend other Austin newbies to do.

**********
In 2008, Kristen Pumphrey started Pommes Frites.  She makes hand-carved hollow books (for flasks, cash or other secret items), candles made with soy wax & re-purposed glass, and pins & magnets made from encyclopedia images and plaid fabric.  All items are reclaimed, re-purposed & handmade with love!  Her unique flasks have been featured on a ton of cool blogs and and continue to create memorable gift-opening scenes all over the world!

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
One thing that makes my products "Austin" is my commitment to keeping waste to a minimum.  Instead of using new materials, I repurpose existing items into something fresh, giving each item a new life.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
I'm most inspired by all the amazing crafty ladies I meet here in Austin.  After moving here (two years in March '10!), I was inspired to "quit my day job", I realized that is possible to make a living doing something you love, while simultaneously promoting DIY & providing people with awesome, sustainable creations.

As The Lone Star Ladies we strive to select unique, finely crafted work for your shopping pleasure - we're positive you'll be impressed by these two gals totally original creations!

Vendor View with Reel Popcorn & Arte Y Chocolate

Shop Austin Gourmet Food Vendors will delight this year with something salty and sweet!

While I was in Austin a couple of weeks ago, I stopped by Reel Popcorn to meet Sharon Easley and sample some of the delicious popcorn we will have at Shop Austin.  Sharon was out, but her specialty popcorn was there, waiting for me to take a bite.  The store was full of movie paraphernalia and popcorn - all flavors, all sizes, and tastes I never imagined (I admit it - dill pickle was my favorite flavor!).

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
It is made completely at our store here in Austin.  47+ flavors available and no other unique popcorn store is available to the public in Austin.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
The City of Austin...everyone here has been so helpful.  Other businesses and customers have been soooo supportive and want the store to succeed.  And, my POPCORN!  When you have a great product that you love, it's easy to be inspired and enthusiastic.

**********

All hand-crafted and packaged artisan chocolates is what makes up Arte y Chocolate.  Selling such confections as double-dipped graham crackers and bon-bons filled with espresso or raspberry ganache,  Krystal Craig of Arte y Chocolate has made an art out of chocolate!

What makes your products uniquely "Austin"?
Arte is an all female owned and locally operated artisan chocolate company in Austin. We try to have local artists create some of our edible chocolate designs (like the yellow bike print displayed in the grahams picture.) Austin is all about healthy and organic and that's exactly what we do.  All high quality couverture dark chocolate and organic ingredients and the designs are made from cocoa butter or edible pearl dusts. Our products are also carried only in locally owned retail businesses.

What is your favorite "Austin" thing to do, or restaurant to eat at, or place to go?
We love to get out and about in Austin. Our favorite restaurants are Vespio, Casa De Luz, Polvos, and Bouldin Creek Coffee shop. We both attend several art shows held at Women & There Work and other local spots every year, and love biking around Zilker park.

We love the fact they are both new to Shop Austin this year, and that popcorn and chocolate go so well together!  Who could be happier?

Sponsor Spotlight - Green, Natural, Cheeky

Shop Austin Hip Sponsors are going green, being natural and feeling cheeky...

Little Pond, with the tag line, "Designs for Green Living" is on a mission to bring the green of the world to the interior of your home!  Having green, eco-friendly interior decor and furniture is possible, and it doesn't stop with hemp linen.... Try out their luxurious fabrics made with environmental awareness and sensitivity, or new furniture made from non-toxic fabrics, soy based foams and certified wood.  Maybe years gone by is your interior vibe, if so, you can choose from their raw vintage or upcycled collection.

Little Pond started out of a desire to push the manufacturing industry into providing healthier options for us - free of toxins, chemicals and allergens, but it's hard for consumers to know who to trust, or have time to research the validity of manufacturers' claims of "non-toxic" or "green" fabrics and furniture.  With a desire to help consumers navigate this emerging green continuum, Rebekah Gainsley of Little Pond wants to keep it simple - shop at Little Pond and you can be assured it's safe for you, your children, your home and your world!  You can also contract with them for services such as painting or staging.

**********

From green to all natural, or isn't that along the same continuum as well?  Texas Natural Supply is a one-of-a-kind business, as in they are one of a very few, if not the only ones in the U.S. that ONLY sell raw, all natural materials and ingredients for personal body care products - lotions, soaps, cosmetics, etc... This also means the sources for all their herbs, botanicals, spices, oils, etc... are all natural as well.

Texas Natural Supply also offers formulation, consulting, private labeling, and everything in between, for small businesses who wish to formulate their own brand of personal care products - maybe I see a Lone Star Ladies Blue eyeshadow in my future.... (80s flashback!)   Their in-house commercial kitchen facility is available for manufacturing and packaging of food and nutrional supplements, and they are registered with the FDA and EPA.  Hollie Mulhaupt, owner and registered nurse, explains it is an extra layer of security that soon will be required of all makers of personal care body products.  You can feel safe that Texas Natural Supply has your body covered, naturally, because they have done the research, navigation, supplying and registering so you don't have to!

**********

Professional ~ Organic ~ Skincare all from Cheeky!  Customized treatments for both men and women, based on skin care needs, and all with a desire to have your skin reach its ultimate level of health - sounds refreshing, and maybe like my face will look young and healthy again, and not like I'm 38 with gray hair from two teenage girls...
Services at Cheeky include facials, from quick to deep pore; microdermabrasion, which is a non-chemical and non-evasive procedure to remove dead, flaky skin cells, stimulating new growth and collagen; microcurrent, which is a non-surgical facelift (sign me up!); dermaplanning, which is a non-evasive skin resurfacing procedure; LED light therapy, which can help reverse and control visible signs of aging and they also offer waxing.  Relaxing in a peaceful and inviting environment where I can come out looking younger, healthier and with rosy-red cheeks sounds great to me - if it does to you, too, check out Cheeky today, located inside the Salon Republic off US HWY 183 and Anderson Mill.

You might just find some goodies from these sponsors in our goodie bags - don't be late!  Get in line early and then shop the rest of the day away on 4/17/2010, 10am-6pm, at Shop Austin!
