Whipstitch Wednesday: Burda Style Remake Challenge

"whipstitch" - a quick note, or a little bit of info...

I was never a fan of Project Runway, until last year.  Honestly, the reason I wasn't a fan is because I never took the time to actually watch it!!  Now that I have - I'm hooked, and I have my daughter Greta hooked as well.  One of our favorite moments this season (so far) was Tim Gunn's smackdown of Gretchen on Episode 5 because she back pedaled on her team and totally threw everyone, including herself, under the bus.

So, my advice to you is "don't back pedal" (or back stitch) on the opportunity to participate in Burda Style's Project Runway Remake Challenge by Rowenta.  Details below:

What:  Project Runway Remake Challenge by Rowenta
When: Ongoing, deadline Sept 30th, 11:59pm (yes, there is still time - don't delay!)
How: While keeping as much of the original garment as you can, the rules say to "repurpose those old pieces into new functional, wearable garments."
ALL the Details:  On the Burda Style Blog - check it out!
BONUS: While you are perusing Burda Style, be sure to get the free skirt pattern!

Treasure Tuesday: Tool Problem

A couple of months ago, Sublime Stitching was having a "tool problem" and we wrote about it in our Hip List.  It seems they are still having a tool problem, but with all new tools!

All new golden dragon scissors.  These Japanese style scissors will delight your eyes while you snip away at your crafts with their embossed dragons and peacocks on the handle!

The all new clover hoop is a perfect fit for most any job.  The chunkiness of the hoop makes it easier to hold in your hand while you are stitching away in the wee hours of the night!

A new set of two pillowcases with 250 thread count is the perfect place to lay your sleepy head after a long day of embroidery.

Free embroidery pattern - stitcher girls!

If you want to be "in-the-know" about all that is going on at Sublime Stitching, be sure to sign up for their newsletter and get 15% off your purchase!

Haute Event: The Austin Quilt Show! Sept. 17th - 19th 2010

The Leaf Quilt detail by Laurie Evans
Quilt by Laurie Evans, 2008 Show

As I have been telling people about the Austin Area Quilt Guild's upcoming show and sale, I have been getting a lot of surprised looks. It's easy to take things for granted when you have been around them all your life - like the amazing quilts made by my Mom, Grandmother and Great-Grandmothers.

For as long as I can remember - my Mom has been Quilting - and helping put on the AAQG show every other year. As you you know - Austin is full of talented artists and artisans - those involved in fine art, fashion and film probably get the most attention. What you may not know is that Austin is also full of talented Quilters!

Quilt by Lorraine Mossman, 2008 Show

Last week Allison wrote a great blog about the purpose and joy Quilts have brought into her life. Today I want to tell you all about the Quilt Show this weekend - I think there will be a lot to surprise you!
Quilt by Sookie Knapp, 2008 Show
For starters there will be Quilts!  Antique Quilts, Miniature and Doll Quilts, Art Quilts, Contemporary Quilts - just about every kind of quilt you can imagine - and many more that you probably can't.  And then there are the activities - all day each day in the Demonstration Booth (scroll down on the linked page for a schedule) - coordinated by yours truly and my talented mom, Mary Beard.  Free Kid's activities, demos of the latest and greatest sewing and long-arm quilting machines, and more!

Beads from The Bead Ranch
Pillow by Malka Dubrawsky
Then there are the Vendors - oh my - Fabric of all kinds, Beads, Embroidery Patterns, Handmade Clothes and Jewelry, Quilting Tools, Quilt Frames, Sewing Machines, and much more!  As you can see, you don't have to be a quilter to appreciate the variety of vendor booths.

And what about gifts?  Members of the Guild have donated beautiful items for sale in the boutique and silent auction.  You'll find napkins and placemats, purses and bags, handcrafted gifts, and quilts of all shapes and sizes. All of the proceeds from the boutique, silent auction and door fees go to support this amazing organization for two years.

The Austin Area Quilt Guild donates Quilts and Blankets to Wounded Soldiers, Baby Quilts to Mothers in need,  educates the community about quilts, the preservation of quilts, and keeps this centuries old tradition alive and relevant!

Join in the fun this weekend!
When: Friday and Saturday 9/17 & 9/18, 10am to 6pm
Sunday 9/19 12pm to 5pm
Where: Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd
Cost: $8.00, kids 12 and under FREE

xo, Anne Marie Beard - ps... I will be in the Demo Booth on Saturday at 3pm talking about using crazy and recycled materials to make purses!

Quilting: A Purpose & Reason Beyond the Warmth

Looking around my house, there is a quilt in every room - hanging on the wall, a basket full of them in our living room, a signature quilt on our bed given as a wedding gift from my mom, on Erin's bed, on Greta's wall, in both their closets waiting for "their own houses", there has even been a handmade quilt on two US submarines, one aircraft carrier and soon to be another aircraft carrier.  (My husband requested "special sizes" just to fit his various bunks over the years...) Looking around the house again, I realize MY FAMILY IS BLESSED by the love of our family's quilting hands, on both sides, but especially my mom's.  I say this because my house is filled with quilts, but I don't quilt. This means every stitch, every piece of fabric, and every knot tied was done by someone else, just for me, or my husband or our girls... that is a special feeling.  It provides more than warmth.

Recently, as some of you may know, my 6 year old niece, Adah, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  My sister and her family live overseas and they were just in the states for a short visit when the diagnosis was made, so their lives have been turned upside down.  One of the first things my mom did after we heard the diagnosis was "whip up" a quilt for Adah to have with her in the hospital and in the ambulance ride while they changed hospitals.  It's just a little piece of "Nani" for Adah to have with her during this time - and it provided her more than warmth as she cuddled underneath it for her ambulance ride.

As I mentioned, I don't quilt, but I attend a church, Hope United Methodist in San Diego, that started the "Prayers & Squares" ministry - and now there are chapters all over the nation! I love this ministry.  It gives me, a non-quilter, the chance to participate in something wonderful by requesting a quilt for those in need.  Shortly after Adah's diagnosis, I requested a "prayer square" for her.  Our church quilters made it with bright colors, full of animals and fun prints.  Our congregation prayed over the "square" (large enough to be a small wall-hanging for her hospital room) during three services and then we tied knots, one by one, saying prayers for Adah.  The day she got it, my sister said she slept with it on her pillow - that night, that little square provided Adah some peace as she slept, and it provided our family in San Diego a feeling of closeness to her.

I also requested a full-sized quilt for my sister, Sara, and her husband, Jason (Adah's parents).  I had a quilt top my mom had given me as a "thank you" to pass on to this ministry for providing her a quilt during her recent health battles.  In perfect timing, it was THAT quilt top the ministry at my church used to make Sara and Jason's quilt - made by our mom many months before, and quilted and tied by my church in California.  When Sara and Jason received the quilt, it immediately replaced what they had been using at the hospital - it provided thoughts of love and prayers for their whole family as they faced this diagnosis together, and it provided a connection for our family from Texas to California and back to Texas again!

The Austin Area Quilt Guild is having their upcoming Show & Sale (more info here in our ezine), which is why I am writing this blog.  Writing about that upcoming event made me think about the quilts in my life and how important they are to me, to my family, to my friends...  Quilts are for everyone, for any time, and any place.  Their purpose and reason for being created is different for everyone - for joy, in celebration, in memory, for decoration, for warmth, for fun, taught in a class, passed down by generations, for prayers and love, as a gift and the list can go on and on and on....  The point is they have a purpose and I hope to encourage you that they can have a purpose and a place in your life, too!

If you live in Austin, or anywhere near Austin, be sure to attend the AAQG's upcoming show, "Changing Gears", but if you live in San Diego, or anywhere near San Diego, then attend the San Diego Quilt Show (same weekend - different cities!).  I will be at the one in San Diego, and Anne Marie will be at the one in Austin (and she is teaching a class!!)

Experience what quilting is today and what it can be in your life!
